Munich and the Bavarian Alps

Munich, located within sight of the Bavarian Alps, is the Capital of Bavaria and the third largest city in Germany. Its name, München, is derived from the Benedictine monks who founded the city, but it was the granting of a salt monopoly during the 14th century that saw Munich become a great city. The subsequent rise in wealth financed a gothic revival, culminating in the construction of the Frauenkirche Cathedral. Known for making cars and beer, and as the hotbed of the political far right during the 1930s, Munich is a diverse city offering much to the first time visitor. Explore further afield, into the Bavarian Alps and the opulent architecture of “Mad” King Ludwig which combines exquisitely with the sheer magnificence of the scenery.
