Barbados

1 miles long and 14 miles across, Barbados is an island paradise of legendary beauty, where the amazing turquoise water of the Caribbean and the renowned Barbadian hospitality work in harmony to produce one of the world’s most desirable holiday destinations.

Overlooked at its centre by Mount Hillaby, Barbados’ astonishing landscape is characterized by cascading waterfalls and perfect palm-fronted beaches. While the Danes, Spaniards and French squabbled over much of the Caribbean, Barbados – some 100 miles from its nearest neighbour – was basking in British isolation.

It is for this reason that the island is often called ‘Little England’; on your travels you will notice signs for Christchurch, Brighton and Worthing. There is also a strong Celtic connection on Barbados, which is perhaps why the golf is so exceptional; amazing courses at Royal Westmoreland and Sandy Lane, including the remarkable Green Monkey layout created by Tom Fazio, are combined with world-leading deluxe resorts.

The ultimate in luxury and elegance is the foundation for the Barbados experience, where golf, leisure and unrivalled customer service are combined with magical results.

Trent Jones Junior was commissioned to create a masterpiece, whilst retaining the original character of the land; as such, the ravines and the traditional coral quarry have been worked into the layout to create some truly fascinating holes.

Among Royal Westmoreland's innumerable admirers is Ian Woosnam, US Masters champion, Ryder Cup captain and local home owner, who is particularly fond of the short holes. The 5th and 6th are special, while the 12th is the dramatic signature hole, with a small green flanked dangerously by a ravine.

From the elegant clubhouse, visiting golfers will enjoy views all the way to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean from this tropical gem of a course.

Trent Jones Junior loves Royal Westmoreland because it demands every club in the bag, so being creative is essential. Royal Westmoreland prides itself on offering the most desirable deluxe private holiday villas in the world, all built around the spectacular Robert Trent Jones Junior golf course. The rental villas range from two to four bedrooms, with a range of styles to suit every demand.

The Royal Villas are delightful detached units, featuring high vaulted ceilings, full air-conditioning, private terraces and some have a swimming pool. Designed by architect Ian Morrison, the Royal Villas are set amid stunning exotic gardens, and represent true luxury and privacy.

The Resort Club Villas are divided between the Cassia Heights and Forest Hills areas of the Royal Westmoreland community, and are modern two-bedroom apartments, decorated and furnished in a traditional Caribbean fashion. All benefit from a large open plan seating area, fully fitted kitchen and a private terrace. The Cassia Heights properties are close to the clubhouse and The Sanctuary, and overlook Coronation Lake, while the Forest Hills development affords amazing views over the beautiful Caribbean waters.

New in 2007 are the Royal Collection Villas at Palm Grove 1. These four-bedroom deluxe properties border the golf course, and are complete with luxury extras including a 4-seater golf buggy. Ideal for larger parties and families, accommodation comes no more elegant.

The facilities at The Sanctuary are available exclusively to Royal Westmoreland guests, and they include outdoor and indoor swimming pools for both adults and children. Also on offer is the Kidz Club, which has endless activities, scheduled aerobic classes such as yoga and Pilates, a well-equipped gym and the resort's tennis academy. The outstanding health and beauty treatments of the Indulgence Spa can also be enjoyed in the privacy of your own villa, or alternatively enjoy the complimentary access to the West Coast beach at the Colony Club.

The Royal Westmoreland resort offers dining options including the elegant Clubhouse Restaurant, the informal Sanctuary Café and for golfers, the Halfway House.

Properties for purchase can top a staggering £10 million, with notable private owners including Freddie Flintoff and Gary Lineker.

Sandy Lane

Old Nine Course
The Old Nine, now in the shadow of Sandy Lane's new developments, was the first building block of the astounding golf complex, and its tree-lined fairways typify the estate. Remaining intimate and challenging, the Old Nine is an integral part of the Sandy Lane experience.

Country Club Course
The Country Club at Sandy Lane is far more open, and from the gently sloping fairways, it is almost always possible to gaze out over the Caribbean. The lush green is in contrast to the five lakes which are carved into the layout, which can be stretched to 7,060 yards for a fantastic and challenging proposition.

Green Monkey Course
The Green Monkey is the name on everyone's list in terms of Caribbean golf. Named after the local primates with whom golfers share the Sandy Lane experience, the Green Monkey is an awe-inspiring new championship track devised by the great Tom Fazio.

Carved amazingly into an old quarry, the course is only available to resort guests, and is a formidable challenge from the 7,389 yard Masters tees. The signature hole, and the new hallmark of Fazio's creation, is the sand-surrounded grass island carved into the shape of the legendary Bajan Green Monkey.

If you are a serious golfer, Sandy Lane's Green Monkey belongs in the elite group of the world's most spectacular courses, alongside the likes of Pebble Beach and Kingsbarns.

In keeping with the resort's reputation as a bastion of traditional luxury, the accommodation at Sandy Lane is sublime. Comprising a total of 112 rooms and suites, the utmost comfort and luxury is guaranteed courtesy of added features such as 42" plasma screen televisions, HiFi system, private bar, in room safe deposit box and telephone system.

Averaging a comfortable 900 sq. feet, there is a fantastic variety of rooms and suites, all of which are rounded off with custom-designed multi-spray showers, heated mirrors, parabolic speakers, and private verandas overlooking the sumptuous exotic gardens or the Caribbean shoreline. The quality of the accommodation is obvious at first sight, but underpinning this, and central to Sandy Lane's success is the truly unrivalled levels of service, with undivided attention paid to the smallest detail.

With the remarkable charm and beauty of Barbados surrounding the resort, Sandy Lane is firmly established in the top percentile of deluxe 5* golf and leisure destinations worldwide.

The Spa at Sandy Lane is a charming Romanesque construction fronted by a waterfall which cascades into the freeform swimming pool. Each suite has a private shower and changing area, and The Spa offers treatments of the most amazing quality, drawing influence from the Caribbean, Europe and the Far East.

Treatments of rare quality and exceedingly high standards are combined with the legendary hospitality of the Barbadians to ensure complete relaxation. Guests can enjoy an invigorating game of tennis, or relax around the freshwater pool. Sandy Lane's exclusive private beach is managed by personal attendants, where you can unwind or try a superb selection of water sports and diving.

The Treehouse Club is a club where kids are free to enjoy all the attractions and activities of the resort under expert supervision.

Sandy Lane's dining options are exquisite, from the freshest local seafood in the haut cuisine L'Acajou restaurant, to the more casual Bajan Blue.

Of the resort's five bars, the aptly named Green Monkey is a personal favourite, serving amazing freshly mixed cocktails.
